Acupuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture has evolved from an ancient Chinese practice that involves the insertion of tiny needles into specific points on the body. This process stimulates proper energy flow and healing in the body.

Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe you achieve optimal health when your qi, or energy, flows smoothly through the meridians. They’ve identified 71 meridians that make up the body’s energy map, and each major organ has a meridian connected to other parts of the body.

Whenever qi doesn’t flow correctly, it manifests in illness and imbalance. Acupuncture helps restore proper flow and well-being.

How does acupuncture work?

Using MRIs and other imaging equipment during acupuncture sessions, scientists can see how the body reacts to acupuncture. When a needle enters the skin, it causes the body to release pain-relieving chemicals. The treatment also seems to activate the body’s self-healing chemicals and regulatory hormones. These reactions may account for acupuncture’s effectiveness.

Does acupuncture hurt?

If you have a fear of needles, you might be hesitant to try acupuncture. However, it's very different than getting shots, and the beneficial outcomes far outweigh the minimal discomfort.

The needles acupuncturists use for the treatment are hair-thin, significantly smaller than injection needles. The smaller the needle, the less you feel, so most people either don’t notice the needle entering the skin or only feel the slightest twinge.

After the needles are in place, the treatment is very relaxing and therapeutic. Most people feel significant relaxation wash over them when the treatment is over.
